SHORT THROW BASICS

What Is a Short Throw Projector?

A short throw projector creates a relatively large image from a shorter lens-to-screen distance than a conventional projector. The key specification is throw ratio, not the physical size of the projector or brightness alone.

Throw Ratio = Lens-to-Screen Distance ÷ Image Width
EXAMPLE 01
0.44:1

A 3-meter-wide image requires approximately 1.32 meters of projection distance.

EXAMPLE 02
0.48:1

A 3-meter-wide image requires approximately 1.44 meters of projection distance.

EXAMPLE 03
0.68–0.82:1

A 3-meter-wide image requires approximately 2.04–2.46 meters depending on zoom position.

PROJECTOR SELECTION LOGIC

How to Choose a Short Throw Projector

Do not start by asking which projector has the most lumens. Start by confirming the image geometry, then choose brightness and resolution around the actual installation.

Image Width
Available Distance
Throw Ratio
Ambient Light
Brightness
Exact Model
1. Image Size
Determine horizontal image width first.
2. Installation Depth
Measure lens-to-screen distance.
3. Brightness
Consider ambient light and image size.
4. Resolution
Choose WXGA or WUXGA by content detail.
SMX CORE PRODUCT RANGE

Compare 4800–7500 Lumen 3LCD Laser Short Throw Projectors

These six 3LCD laser models form the core SMX short throw range. Compare native resolution, throw ratio and optical installation characteristics before selecting by brightness.

Model Brightness Resolution Throw Ratio Main Positioning
MX-ST4800W 4800 lm WXGA 0.48:1 Education / meeting / training
MX-ST4800U 4800 lm WUXGA 0.44:1 Professional education / business
MX-SL6000W 6000 lm WXGA 0.44:1 Bright education / business
MX-SL6000U 6000 lm WUXGA 0.44:1 Golf / immersive / professional AV
MX-SL7000U 7000 lm WUXGA 0.68–0.82:1 Golf / simulation / large training
MX-SL7500U 7500 lm WUXGA 0.68–0.82:1 High-brightness professional applications
4800 SERIES

Compact Mainstream Short Throw

WXGA 0.48:1 or WUXGA 0.44:1 depending on installation depth and content detail.

6000 SERIES

Higher Brightness + 0.44:1

More brightness while preserving compact optical geometry.

7000 / 7500 SERIES

Professional Installation Flexibility

WUXGA with 0.68–0.82:1, zoom and lens shift for applications requiring greater optical adjustment.

BRIGHTNESS SELECTION

4800 vs 6000 vs 7000 vs 7500 Lumens

Higher brightness becomes increasingly valuable as projected image area and ambient light increase. However, brightness should always be evaluated together with the optical platform.

4800
LUMENS

Mainstream Professional ST

Education, meeting rooms and controlled professional environments.

6000
LUMENS

High-Brightness Compact ST

Bright classrooms, golf, immersive and larger images.

7000
LUMENS

Professional Flexible ST

Larger professional installations with more available projection depth.

7500
LUMENS

High-Brightness Professional ST

Demanding golf, training, immersive and simulation environments.

Do not select a short throw projector by lumens alone. A 6000-lumen 0.44:1 model can be more suitable than a 7500-lumen 0.68–0.82:1 model when the installation has very limited projection depth.
RESOLUTION SELECTION

WXGA vs WUXGA Short Throw Projectors

Resolution determines how much native image detail the projector can display. SMX offers both WXGA and WUXGA options in its 4800 and 6000 lumen core short throw range.

WXGA
1280 × 800

Practical for standard presentations, training material and general education or business use.

MX-ST4800W / MX-SL6000W
WUXGA
1920 × 1200

Better suited to detailed content, spreadsheets, simulation, golf graphics and professional AV.

4800U / 6000U / 7000U / 7500U
A projector accepting a higher-resolution input does not become that native resolution. Always compare native imaging resolution when evaluating image detail.
INSTALLATION FLEXIBILITY

Fixed Compact Short Throw vs Zoom & Lens Shift Platforms

The shortest throw ratio is not automatically the most flexible solution. Different optical systems solve different installation problems.

0.48:1

Compact Fixed Geometry

Used by MX-ST4800W. A straightforward short throw solution when installation geometry is known.

0.44:1

Shorter Projection Distance

Used by 4800U and 6000W/U platforms where compact front projection depth is important.

0.68–0.82:1

Zoom + Lens Shift

7000U and 7500U provide a wider optical range and lens shift, useful when projector position requires more adjustment.

SHORT THROW APPLICATIONS

Where Are Professional Short Throw Projectors Used?

Short throw projection is valuable wherever large images must be created without using a long projection path.

EDUCATION

Classrooms & Training

Reduce front-of-room projection distance and support teacher movement.

BUSINESS

Meeting Rooms

Useful where conference tables limit available projector placement.

GOLF SIMULATOR

Golf Simulation

Reduce projector-to-screen depth while considering golfer position and shadows.

IMMERSIVE

Immersive Projection

Useful for compact multi-surface projection environments.

SIMULATION

Training & Simulation

WUXGA models suit detailed simulation and professional visual content.

EXHIBITION

Museum & Exhibition

Short projection distances help where visitor circulation limits projector placement.

BUYING QUESTIONS

Short Throw Projector FAQ

Is short throw the same as ultra short throw?

No. Ultra short throw projectors operate much closer to the screen. Short throw projectors provide a balance between compact projection distance and installation flexibility.

Is 0.44:1 better than 0.48:1?

Not automatically. 0.44:1 requires slightly less projection distance, but the correct choice depends on available space, resolution and projector platform.

Why choose 0.68–0.82:1 instead of 0.44:1?

The 7000U and 7500U platform provides zoom and lens shift, giving more optical positioning flexibility when the installation has enough depth.

How do I calculate projection distance?

Multiply horizontal image width by throw ratio. A 4-meter-wide image with a 0.44:1 projector requires approximately 1.76 meters of lens-to-screen distance.

Which short throw projector should I choose?

Start with image width and available distance, determine the required throw ratio, then compare brightness, resolution and installation features.
