What Do Projector Lumens Mean?

Projector lumen output describes the amount of light produced by the projector. However, the perceived brightness of the projected image also depends on how widely that light is spread and how much ambient light reaches the projection surface.

Lumens = Light Output

Higher lumen output provides more available light for the projected image.

Resolution = Image Detail

WXGA or WUXGA determines native pixel detail—not projector brightness.

Throw Ratio = Installation Distance

Throw ratio determines the relationship between image width and lens-to-screen distance.

Do not compare projectors using lumens alone. A 7500 lumen projector is not automatically more suitable than a 6000 lumen model if its throw ratio or installation geometry does not fit the room.

Selection principle: calculate the actual image dimensions first. A projector illuminating a 3 m wide image and the same projector illuminating a 5 m wide image are not operating under the same brightness conditions.
