Dome projection systems often place multiple projectors inside or around a hemispherical structure. Short throw optics can reduce the required installation depth and provide more flexibility when projector positions are constrained by the dome frame, audience area or simulator structure.

Start with Dome Geometry, Not Projector Brightness

Dome projection is a geometry-driven system. Before selecting a projector, define the dome diameter, dome type, projector mounting positions and the approximate projected area required from each channel.

THROW RATIO & CHANNEL DISTANCE

Calculate Projection Distance for Each Dome Channel

In a dome system, throw ratio should be calculated for each projector channel. Do not simply multiply the full dome diameter by the throw ratio, because each projector usually covers only part of the curved surface.

Important: these are flat-width reference calculations. Final dome geometry also depends on projector angle, curved surface shape, optical axis and overlap area.

How Many Projectors Does a Dome Need?

There is no universal projector quantity for a dome. The number of projectors depends on the dome diameter, target field of view, projector lens coverage, mounting position, desired resolution and the overlap required between adjacent channels.
