Projector Refresh Rate Explained: 60Hz, Frame Rate, Input Lag & Motion

Projector refresh rate describes how frequently the displayed image can be updated over time. It is closely related to source frame rate, signal format and motion performance, but it should not be confused with input lag or pixel response time.

What Is the Difference Between Refresh Rate and Frame Rate?

Refresh rate describes the display system, while frame rate describes the source content. They work together, but they are not the same measurement.

60Hz

Common in presentation, video and many general-purpose projector signal formats.

Higher Refresh Rates

Can provide more frequent image updates when both the source and projector support the required mode.

Resolution Dependency

A projector may support a higher refresh rate at one resolution but not at another.

Input Dependency

HDMI version, bandwidth, signal timing and projector input design can limit available display modes.

Important: do not describe a projector simply as “120Hz capable” without confirming the resolution, input interface and signal mode at which that refresh rate is supported.

A projector's signal capability is defined by a combination of image resolution, refresh rate, interface bandwidth and supported timing formats. Looking at only one number can create misleading expectations.

Applications involving real-time movement can benefit from a signal and display system capable of frequent image updates. However, refresh rate should be evaluated together with input lag, source frame rate and total system latency.

Confirm what frame rate the computer, media server or video source can reliably generate.

Match Resolution & Refresh

Verify the required refresh mode at the actual resolution you plan to use.

Check the Input Interface

Higher refresh capability does not replace the need to assess display latency for interactive applications.
