How to Choose a Lens for a Large Venue Projector

Choosing the correct large venue projector lens is just as important as selecting the right projector brightness. A projector may provide 15,000, 20,000 or even 25,000 lumens, but if the lens cannot create the required image width from the available installation position, the projector is not suitable for the project.

For professional AV installations, lens selection should begin with two measurements:

  • Required image width

  • Projector lens-to-screen distance

These measurements are used to calculate the required throw ratio.

What Is Projector Throw Ratio?

Throw ratio describes the relationship between projector distance and projected image width.

The basic formula is:

Throw Ratio = Lens-to-Screen Distance ÷ Image Width

For example, if a projector is installed 20 meters from a 10-meter-wide screen:

20 m ÷ 10 m = 2.0:1

The required lens must therefore include approximately 2.0:1 within its supported throw-ratio range.

How to Calculate Projection Distance

If the required throw ratio and screen width are already known, the projection distance can be calculated using:

Projection Distance = Image Width × Throw Ratio

For example, with a 10-meter-wide image and a 1.50:1 lens position:

10 m × 1.50 = 15 m

The projector lens would be positioned approximately 15 meters from the screen.

How to Calculate Image Width

If the projection distance and lens throw ratio are known:

*Lens ranges may overlap. The final lens should not be selected only because the required throw ratio falls inside its range. Zoom position, lens shift, projector model, image size and installation tolerance should also be considered.

Example 1 — 10-Meter-Wide Screen at 6 Meters

Assume the required projection image is 10 meters wide and the projector lens can be installed approximately 6 meters away.

6 ÷ 10 = 0.60:1
